Finding Out Why Your Buy Box Disappeared — Prices Outside Amazon

Sometimes Amazon removes the Buy Box from a listing that looks perfectly healthy — you are in stock, your price has not changed, and nothing is obviously wrong. Sales on that ASIN drop to almost nothing. This guide explains the most common cause, how to confirm it, and what you can do about it.

Why Amazon Removes the Buy Box

Amazon compares the price of the products it sells against the rest of the internet, not only against other offers on Amazon. If it finds a shop outside Amazon selling the same product cheaper — counting shipping — it may remove the Buy Box from that listing entirely.

The listing stays online, but the Add to Basket and Buy now buttons disappear. To a shopper the page looks broken or untrustworthy, so most simply leave. In practice this takes sales on that ASIN close to zero.

Step 1 — Rule Out the Simpler Explanations First

Before you start looking outside Amazon, check the two far more common causes:

  • You are out of stock. Running out of inventory is the most frequent reason for losing the Buy Box. Check the inventory columns in the Buy Box and Price Monitor.

  • A competitor undercut you on Amazon. In that case the Buy Box is not gone — somebody else holds it. The Buy Box and Price Monitor shows you who, and what they changed.

If the Buy Box is genuinely absent rather than held by another seller, continue below.

Step 2 — Find the Cheaper Offer Outside Amazon

Use a price comparison site to see what your product currently sells for elsewhere. Idealo covers the five largest European markets (UK, DE, FR, IT, ES) and shows shipping costs alongside the product price, which is exactly what you need for the next step.

Step 3 — Work Out the Price You Would Have to Match

Amazon compares the total a shopper pays, so you have to match the product price plus shipping — not the product price on its own.

Step 4 — Decide, Then Check That It Worked

From here it is a commercial decision: can you match that total price without giving up too much margin?

If you match it, Amazon will usually restore the Buy Box on its own. Watch the listing over the following days — the Buy Box and Price Monitor will show it coming back.

If matching the price would cost you more than the ASIN is worth, the alternative is to address the source rather than the symptom. Many brands treat this as a channel-pricing conversation with the reseller who is selling below the intended price.

Confirming It in Seller Central

Amazon also flags this on its own side. In Seller Central under Pricing → Pricing Health, the Featured offer tab lists offers that are ineligible for the Buy Box, and offers that are eligible but not featured. A listing suppressed because of a cheaper price elsewhere will usually appear there.
