Finding Out Where You Lost the Buy Box and Who Dropped Prices

What you will achieve

This guide helps you answer two related questions: for which products have you lost the Buy Box, and which other sellers are driving prices down on your listings. It combines a quick conceptual primer on why the Buy Box matters with a concrete, step-by-step workflow using two dashboards.

Why the Buy Box matters

The Buy Box is the prominent "Add to Cart" box on an Amazon product detail page. Winning it significantly increases your sales, because the large majority of purchases go through that button. If you do not hold the Buy Box, your offer is effectively pushed into the background even when your listing is otherwise healthy.

How the Buy Box is won

Winning the Buy Box depends on several factors working together:

  • Competitive pricing — including shipping costs. A lower landed price increases your likelihood of securing the Buy Box.

  • Fulfilment method — sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) or Seller-Fulfilled Prime are more likely to win, because Amazon favours fast, reliable shipping.

  • Seller or Vendor performance metrics — low order-defect, cancellation, and refund rates, timely shipping, consistent stock availability, and high-quality customer service all improve eligibility.

The practical challenge is that competitors can undercut your price or change fulfilment methods at any time, and Amazon's automated pricing can move your price on its own — so Buy Box ownership needs to be monitored, not assumed.

Workflow A — Buy Box and Price Monitor

Use this for the weekly operational view of what changed recently.

Step 1 — Review the weekly price and Buy Box changes

The Buy Box and Price Monitor gives you a regular update when the price of some of your products has changed. You can directly compare the current price against your Recommended Retail Price (RRP), and see which seller is newly in the Buy Box as a result of a price change.

Step 2 — Identify the most active price-droppers

By downloading the chart/table, you can identify the sellers that are most active in price dumping, and see which of your products are most affected. Use the BB Price Status filter (e.g. Lost Buy Box, Decrease, New Buy Box) to focus only on ASINs where something actually moved, and check the Previous Buy Box Owner column to see who held the Buy Box before.

Tip: A frequent root cause of losing the Buy Box is being out of stock. Cross-check the inventory columns in the Buy Box and Price Monitor before assuming a competitor undercut you.

Workflow B — Brand Overview (ASIN Level)

Use this for a longer, competition-focused Buy Box review across your tracked products.

Step 1 — Review competitive Buy Box context

With the Brand Overview you can check, for your tracked products, the current price, the top seller and their Buy Box share, and the number of other sellers competing in the Buy Box.

Step 2 — Pinpoint the price-dumping sellers

By downloading the chart you can identify the sellers most active in price dumping and the products most affected — the same diagnostic as Workflow A, but viewed through the competitive-landscape lens of Market Insights.

Monitoring routine (recommended)

  1. Monitor weekly reports — regularly review the Buy Box and Price Monitor to track price changes and new competitors in the Buy Box.

  2. Analyse competitor activity — download and analyse the charts showing the most active price-changers, and identify products affected by price dumping.

  3. Adjust strategy — respond to competitor pricing where possible, consider fulfilment changes (e.g. FBA), and maintain strong seller/vendor performance metrics to protect Buy Box eligibility.
