Finding and Fixing Broken Variations

Migration note (Phase 1b). This use case was reproduced from the legacy pages "How do I find out if I have broken variations?" Broken variations make your Amazon assortment look fragmented to customers, split reviews across listings, and hurt conversion. This workflow shows you how to find them with the Variations Monitor and how to get them fixed with Amazon.

Prerequisite. To use the Variations Monitor you must maintain an identifier per Child ASIN in the "Additional Parent ASIN" column of your catalog in emax digital. The identifier can be an actual Parent ASIN, but it can also be any word or combination of characters that groups the variants together.

What are broken variations?

Broken variations are incorrect or inconsistent product listings that confuse or frustrate customers. They occur when product options (size, colour, style, etc.) are presented incorrectly. Common issues include:

  • Incorrectly grouped products — different products are mistakenly grouped under a single listing, making it unclear what is being sold.

  • Missing or misleading variations — options that should be available (e.g. colours or sizes) are missing, mislabelled, or inaccurately described.

  • Price discrepancies — variations of the same product have inconsistent or incorrect pricing.

  • Image inconsistencies — images that do not match the selected variation, so customers cannot tell what they are buying.

Example: a "White" colour variant is no longer on the same product detail page as the other three variants of the item — it has split off into its own listing.

How to find and fix broken variations

Step 1 — Find broken variations

Open the Product Variations Monitor and check whether you have any broken variations. To see which Child ASIN ↔ Parent ASIN combinations are broken, use the Variation Status filter set to "Broken" — this is the default filter setting. The affected ASINs appear in the detail table below.

Step 2 — Download and report to Amazon

Download the table as an Excel file and send it to Amazon Support, either through a ticket or via your Amazon account manager, depending on your support level.

Tip: You can request a template from Amazon to fix broken variations through their ticket system. Providing it helps Amazon Support resolve the issues faster.

Where to find the broken-variation sheet

  • Vendor Central: search for "Variation Sheet / Template" in the search bar.

  • Seller Central: go to Catalog → Add products via Upload → Download spreadsheet → Update product details. From there, add the category the variation is in (e.g. Toys) and download the spreadsheet.
