Migration note (Phase 1b): This use case was reproduced and merged from two legacy pages ("How do I find out if I have broken variations?" and "Product Variations Monitor — How to find and fix broken variations?"), tidied for structure but not yet fully optimised or fact-checked. Some legacy screenshots reflect an older version of the Variations Monitor; the basic workflow remains the same.
What you will achieve
This guide explains what "broken variations" are on Amazon, how to find them with the Variations Monitor, and how to fix them via Amazon. For the full dashboard reference (all filters, statuses, and sections), see the Variations Monitor page under Monitoring → Detail Page Health.
Prerequisite: To use the Variations Monitor, you must maintain an identifier per Child ASIN in the "Additional Parent ASIN" column of your catalog in emax digital. The identifier can be an actual Parent ASIN, but it can be any word or combination of characters that groups the variants together. See the Vendor Catalog and Seller Catalog documentation for how to upload Category, Sub-Category, Tags, and Additional Parent ASIN.
1. What are broken variations?
Broken variations are incorrect or inconsistent product listings that confuse or frustrate customers. They occur when product options (size, colour, style, etc.) are presented inconsistently on Amazon. Common issues include:
-
Incorrectly grouped products — different products mistakenly grouped under a single listing, causing confusion about what is actually being sold.
-
Missing or misleading variations — options that should be available (e.g. different colours or sizes) are missing, mislabeled, or inaccurately described.
-
Price discrepancies — variations of the same product have inconsistent or incorrect pricing.
-
Image inconsistencies — images that do not match the selected variation, making it hard for customers to know what they are buying.
Example: a "White" colour variant is no longer on the same product detail page as the other variants of the same family — it has split off onto its own page. That is a broken variation.
2. Finding broken variations
Step 1 — Open the Variations Monitor and filter for "Broken"
Go to the Variations Monitor and check whether you have any broken variations. To see which Child ASIN ↔ Parent ASIN combinations are broken, use the Variation Status filter set to Broken — this is the default filter setting. The details appear in the table below the charts.
In the live dashboard, a Broken status means multiple child ASINs that share the same Additional Parent ASIN in your catalog are showing up on different parent detail pages on Amazon — i.e. the variation family is fragmented. Compare the Additional Parent ASIN column against the Parent ASIN on Detail Page column to decide which is correct.
Tip: The dashboard also surfaces a "Recommendations for Additional Parent ASINs" count — active ASINs that have a parent detected on Amazon but no Additional Parent ASIN recorded in your catalog. These are the quickest wins: copy the detected parent into your catalog.
3. Fixing broken variations
Step 2 — Download the table and report to Amazon
You can download the table as an Excel file and send it to Amazon Support — either through a ticket or via your Amazon account manager, depending on your support level.
Tip: You can request a template from Amazon to fix broken variations through their ticket system. Providing the template back to Support helps them resolve the issues faster.
Where to find the variation/flat file on Amazon
-
Vendor Central (VC): search for "Variation Sheet / Template" in the search bar.
-
Seller Central (SC): in the navigation, go to Catalog → Add products via Upload → download spreadsheet → Update product details. From there, add the category the variation is in (e.g. Toys) and download the spreadsheet.
